World CAP Gambling.

The first week of the 2006 FIFA World Cup has seen a surge of visits to sports and gambling websites with the BBC the most popular sports destination
The BBC’s sports website received 1.3 million unique visitors in the first week, four times as many as nearest rival Sky Sports.

The most popular gaming website was Ladbrokes with 114,000 unique visitors, according to the Internet research company.
Saturday, the day of England’s first match in the tournament against Paraguay, nearly one million fans visited a sports or gambling website. Traffic for the week peaked on Sunday (11 June) with 1.1 million people going online, most likely for post-match analysis.
Visitors to sports or gambling sites averaged 21 minutes online and Betfair proved the “stickiest” site with visitors averaging one hour and 10 minutes during the week, more than five times as long as BBC visitors at 13 minutes.
The peak time for visiting a site was between 6 pm and 7 pm with 4.2 per cent of the active internet population at that time looking at such sites.
European internet analyst at Nielsen/NetRatings Alex Burmaster said: “The millions visiting sports and gambling websites around the World Cup show what a vital part online plays in today’s sporting events. It’s interesting to note that the appetite for gambling is particularly strong – these visitors averaging 39 minutes whereas those online for sports new averaging ‘only’ 16 minutes.

Gambling with my mobile

Researches have forecast huge growth for the mobile gambling industry, predicting that the value of bets placed will rise from USD 2 billion to USD 23 billion by 2011.

In a new report titled Mobile Gambling: Casinos, Lotteries & Betting ,the growth will be primarily attributable to the increasing popularity of mobile lotteries. He predicts that lotteries will account for 41 per cent of total mobile gambling expenditure over the next five years.

They also believes that the roll out of 3G services and more sophisticated handsets will cause a rise in mobile casino game usage, as will the relaxation of US state laws regarding mobile gambling.

"Like all sectors of gambling, mobile gambling remains a legislation constrained industry with higher potential where restrictions on mobile gambling are lifted in key markets such as the USA," Gibson stated.

"We anticipate that the mobile channel will push gambling services out to a broader/lower stake market than existing channels, offering opportunities for market growth where legislation permits."

American's gambling habits are changing ?!

America's taste for gambling may be going sour. A new report from the Washington, D.C.-based Pew Research Center shows an increasing number of people think gambling is bad, and they're withholding their money as a result.

Is Las Vegas is being affected or not. The quick answer is yes and no. Although Las Vegas casinos have reported record revenues in recent years, much of that increase doesn't directly involve gambling.

Millions of people fly and drive into Las Vegas every year to try their luck at casinos. But the number of people looking to take that chance is beginning to fall off just a little bit.

UNLV economist Keith Schwer said, "Yes, there's been a slight decline over the last few years."

Schwer has studied Las Vegas' gaming economy for 20 years. He says the Pew Research Center study has teeth. "The slice of the population that enjoys gambling has been reduced slightly."

Some 2,200 people nationwide were surveyed for the report. Some of its findings are: 29-percent regularly visit casinos, but only 24-percent gamble.

Schwer attributes this to casinos nationwide adjusting their focus; adding live entertainment, restaurants and spas. He says Las Vegas is the prime example.

"People are coming to Las Vegas for gambling. But also remember Las Vegas (over) the last 15 to 20 years, we've actually diversified our economy, our travel and tourism economy."

While 67-percent of those surveyed say they regularly gamble, only 23-percent say they enjoy it. So, will this nationwide shift away from gaming impact Las Vegas in the long run?

In Schwer's opinion, slightly, but he adds no casino here will ever be in danger of having to close the doors because of a lack of business. "With gambling readily available throughout the United States, you would expect over time that we would reach some type of an equilibrium," he said.

In other words, Schwer believes gambling is now so readily available across the nation that people now consider it common, not unique, and their interest in it may be waning.

But in Las Vegas, any effect will be only a ripple.

The Pew Research Center survey also shows a decrease in the number of people utilizing sportsbooks. Only 14-precent of those surveyed say they place bets on professional sports.
